Using social media, cell phones, or in conversations with peers; students make threats to hurt themselves or others. How these situations are handled is vital to the safety and security of our students and the liability to the district. Too often, administrators are developing a plan to address these situations during the event. Afterwards, questions arise if everything was done correctly, consistently, and documented appropriately. Before the Crisis is a course that will enable participants to assess the severity of a threat, analyze the safety of the students and staff, and collaboratively develop a plan of action to protect and support the students. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the student safety assessment process. The procedures taught are considered best practice according to the Safe Schools Initiative supported by the United States Department of Education and the United States Secret Service. Participants will recognize the importance of having a system that helps them proactively identify potential safety concerns before a crisis happens. The system provides the necessary documentation to guide decision making for students with IEP's, 504's and Behavior Intervention Plans. This system also assists with decision making to ensure districts are compliant with SB100 and restorative justice by providing resources for interventions and supports. At the conclusion of the course, participants will apply the skills and information obtained by implementing the system through hands-on activities and potential threat scenarios. They will be able to identify specific types of threats, how to develop a student safety assessment and management team, how to use scripted protocols to handle situations with fidelity, and establish a plan for the reintegration of the student(s) into the school environment.
